Watercolour Painting

Techniques for beginners and intermediate

The tutor:

Jeremy Pugh BA (Hons), PGCE, TEFL (Masters)

Jeremy studied at Bath Academy of Art and has taught art and design for over thirty years in both state and independent schools and in Adult Education in Kent , Sussex and Wiltshire. He has exhibited work in provincial galleries, the R.P.S. Gallery Bath and the Hayward Gallery, London.

The course:

6 X 2 Hours, over six weeks that introduce the basic techniques of watercolour painting through a series of practical tasks. To include wash techniques, wet on wet, scumbling, use of resist, wet on dry, salt technique, zoning, underdrawing etc.

It will include some analysis of the work of classic watercolour artists such as John Sell Cotman and there will be opportunities for student inspired work if desired.

Students will gain confidence in using a range of techniques and a greater understanding of the visual effects possible using water-based pigments.

Course dates: 

Starts Saturday 29th Jan – Sat 5th March 2022 ( 6 Saturday morning sessions)


10am – 12noon



Full course fees are payable at the first session (£120)

*Please note, if you are unable to attend a session/s due to illness/isolation you will be refunded 50% per session/s missed. Please do not attend if you are unwell.*


The course will take place in the workshop room on the first floor at the shop (Spacecraft Westbury). There are 12 stairs leading to the room with hand-rails on either side.

Basic Equipment you will need:

*Watercolour paper A3 or larger, pad , or loose with a support

* Windsor and Newton Cotman watercolour box, 12 half pans/ and or Tube W’cols.

*Selection of brushes inc. flat, round and detail *Masking Fluid (not essential) *clear wax candle/ child reads cheap wax crayons *scalpel/ craft knife or large safety pin *H/ HB pencil *White China saucer

*White Gouache (optional)

*Kitchen Towel

*Small water container, a mug will do
